What Is a Shaker Kitchen Style?

The Shaker Door

What Is a Shaker Kitchen Style?

Shaker kitchens are known for their simple framed cabinet doors. Each door has a recessed centre panel with clean rails and stiles, creating a classic look without heavy decorative detailing.

The same door style can feel modern or traditional depending on the colour, frame width, finish and handles you choose.

Find Your Style

Which Shaker Kitchen Style Suits Your Home?

The same door can look completely different depending on colour, handles and benchtop. These are the four looks we build most.

Modern Shaker Most requested

Modern Shaker

Use a slimmer-looking profile, simple hardware and restrained colours for Shaker cabinetry that keeps its character without making the room feel overly traditional.

Classic White Shaker Easy to live with

Classic White Shaker

White, warm white and cream cabinetry keep the framed door detail visible while giving you a neutral base for benchtops, splashbacks and hardware.

Traditional Shaker Bright & bold

Traditional Shaker

Bring more classic character through the cabinetry colour, handles, benchtop edges and other decorative details rather than changing the basic Shaker principle.

Coloured or Two-Tone Shaker Bright & bold

Coloured or Two-Tone Shaker

Use a different colour on an island, base cabinetry or selected cupboards rather than carrying one finish through every door.

Popular shaker colours

Compare whites, warm neutrals, deeper colours and two-tone combinations against your benchtop, flooring and hardware before you decide.

Pair the Cabinetry With the Right Details

Benchtop

Benchtop

Compare lighter, darker and patterned surfaces against your selected cabinet colour rather than choosing the benchtop separately.

Splashback

Splashback

Tiles, glass and slab-style splashbacks can each change how traditional or modern the finished Shaker kitchen feels.

Handles and Knobs

Handles and Knobs

The size, shape and finish of your hardware can make the same cabinet door feel more classic, understated or contemporary.

Made to Measure

Your Shaker Cabinetry, Made to Measure in Sydney

We plan the cabinet sizes, storage, door profile, finishes and internal fittings around your room before your cabinetry is manufactured at our Wetherill Park facility.

Shaker Door Profile

Shaker Door Profile

Compare different Shaker profiles and frame proportions to decide how much detail you want across drawers, cupboards and tall cabinetry.

Door Colour and Finish

Door Colour and Finish

Choose from available polyurethane, laminate, timber and other cabinetry finishes, depending on the door specification and appearance you want.

Handles and Knobs

Handles and Knobs

Compare cup pulls, knobs and handles in different shapes and finishes. Hold them in your hand and see how they look against the actual cabinet colour before deciding.

Glass Doors and Open Shelves

Glass Doors and Open Shelves

Break up a full run of solid cabinetry with glass-front cupboards or open shelving where you want crockery or display pieces visible.

Drawers and Internal Storage

Drawers and Internal Storage

Plan drawer depths, pull-out storage, pantry fittings and other hardware around the things you actually need to put away.

Island Cabinetry

Island Cabinetry

Continue the Shaker profile around an island, use a contrasting finish or keep selected panels simpler depending on how much detail you want in the centre of the room.

Getting It Right

Like Shaker Cabinetry but Not Sure About the Details?

A Shaker kitchen can move from clean and simple to heavily traditional surprisingly quickly. These are the decisions worth working through before the doors and finishes are ordered.

Your Worry

  • The Frames Will Be Hard to Clean
“Won’t dust and cooking mess sit in all those edges?”
  • It’ll Look Too Traditional
    “I like the doors, but I don’t want a country-style kitchen.”
  • There’ll Be Too Much Detail
“I’m worried every door and drawer will make the kitchen look busy.”
  • I’ll Choose the Wrong Colour
“White feels safe, but I don’t want to regret playing it too safe.”
  • The Handles Won’t Work With It
“There are too many knobs, pulls and finishes to choose from.”
  •  I Can’t Picture the Finished Kitchen
“I like individual samples, but I don’t know how they’ll all look together.”

How We Approach It

  • Not every Shaker profile has the same depth or detailing. Compare the actual door options in person so you can see the recessed area, run your hand over the profile and judge what you’ll be cleaning.
  • Keep the surrounding details simpler. A cleaner Shaker profile, understated handles, straightforward benchtop and restrained colour palette can give you the framed look without loading the room with traditional details.
  • Shaker does not need to appear on every visible surface. We can work through where framed doors add something and where simpler panels or fewer visual breaks may suit the design better.
  • Compare cabinet samples beside your preferred benchtop, handles and splashback. You can also introduce colour on an island or selected cabinetry instead of committing the entire kitchen to one stronger shade.
  • Put the hardware against the door rather than choosing it from a photo. Seeing the size, colour and shape on the actual cabinetry makes it much easier to judge whether it feels too heavy, too traditional or just right.
  • Work through the cabinetry, colour and layout first, then use your 3D kitchen design to understand how those decisions come together across the whole room before manufacturing begins.
Bring the Shaker kitchens you have saved, even if they look completely different. We can help identify the details you actually like in each one.

Plan Your Budget

What Changes the Cost of a Shaker Kitchen?

There is no single Shaker kitchen price. The number of cabinets, door specification, finish, hardware, benchtop and amount of renovation work all affect what goes into the final quote.

Kitchen Size and Layout

More cabinetry, tall cupboards, corners and islands increase the amount of material and hardware required.

Shaker Door Finish

The selected profile, material and finish affect how your cabinet and drawer fronts are manufactured and priced.

Cabinetry Finish

Polyurethane, laminate, timber and other available finishes have different specifications and price points.

Benchtop

Material, overall size, thickness, cut-outs, edge treatment and waterfall ends can all affect the final figure

Storage and Hardware

Internal drawers, pull-out baskets, pantry systems, soft-close hardware and other cabinet fittings add different components to the project.

Renovation Scope

A cabinetry supply project is different from a renovation involving removal, installation, benchtops, plumbing, electrical work or other trades.

Your Quote Explained

Know What Has Been Included Before You Proceed

A clear project quote should set out the cabinetry, products and work being supplied rather than leaving you to work it out once the renovation has started.

Depending on your agreed project, your quote may include:

  • Kitchen design and layout
  • Final cabinetry measurements
  • Custom-made cabinetry
  • Selected Shaker doors and finishes
  • Selected handles and cabinet hardware
  • Benchtop where specified
  • Cabinetry installation where selected
  • Applicable manufacturer’s warranty

Other work may be quoted separately depending on the project:

  • Existing kitchen removal
  • Electrical work
  • Plumbing work
  • Splashback installation
  • Appliances
  • Sink and tapware
Bring us the kitchen information you already have and we can work through the specifications that need to be included in your individual quote.

Shaker Kitchen FAQs

Questions About Shaker Kitchens in Sydney

If you cannot find an answer to your question regarding a small budget kitchen, then feel free to call us at Paradise Kitchens on (02) 9757 4400 to enquire or  book a free consultation online.

What is a Shaker style kitchen?

A Shaker kitchen uses cabinet doors with a framed outer edge and recessed centre panel. The basic profile is simple, so the finished style changes significantly depending on the colour, frame detail, handles, benchtop and surrounding finishes.

Can a Shaker kitchen look modern?

Yes. Choose a simpler Shaker profile and pair it with restrained cabinetry colours, straightforward hardware and cleaner surrounding finishes. You still get the depth of a framed cabinet door without making the kitchen feel heavily traditional.

What handles work with Shaker kitchen cabinets?

The available colour range depends on the cabinet door and finish you select. Paradise Kitchens offers polyurethane and other cabinetry finishes, so compare physical samples in the showroom alongside your preferred benchtop and hardware before deciding.

What handles work with Shaker kitchen cabinets?

It depends on the look you want. Knobs and cup pulls can create a more traditional appearance, while simpler bar or pull handles can make the same Shaker cabinetry feel more contemporary. Compare them against your actual door sample.

Can I see my Shaker kitchen before it is manufactured?

Yes. Paradise Kitchens can create a 3D view of a custom kitchen so you can see how the cabinetry and layout come together before the kitchen is made.

How much does a Shaker kitchen cost in Sydney?

It depends on the kitchen size, number of cabinets, Shaker door specification, finish, benchtop, hardware and renovation work required. A project-specific quote is the best way to understand the cost of the kitchen you are actually planning.
